We had a totem pole cactus installed and now little white dots are appearing. I paid too much for this and am hoping I can save it! Any suggestions?
From what I can see, that's what this plant looks like. If it was going to flower, it would do it from where those little white dots are. Here is a photo: Totem Pole Cactus Indulges in Unusual Flowering
What an interesting cactus. It apparently rarely produces flowers and fruit. Please post followup photos if it does. http://www.public.asu.edu/~camartin/plants/Plant html files/pachycereusschottii.html
My understanding about cactus plants is almost entirely lacking, but there is a sentence in the document Junglekeeper cited: Lower stem areoles are white and woolly with 1 to 15 very short white spines (0.1 to 0.3 inch long). The upper areoles can have numerous (>20) spines that are up to 4 inches long. So the white dots would be the areoles, yes? If they get anything, it would be spines. If I understand that correctly.
I believe those comments apply to the species and not to the monstrsus form The article is for the species but includes information on the form which is spineless.
