First posting in 2008 VCBF scout Melody Hessing has photos of the Autumnalis Rosea on Chancellor Boulevard (extension NW Marine), to the west of the intersection of Theology Mall and Newton Crescent. Pictures are from first and third tree west of intersection. Melody also reports: This will be a beauty. Beautiful umbrella shape, and views behind of Howe Sound and Black Mountain, West Vancouver. UBC: First tree turning right on Wesbrook Crescent, about 30 metres north and downhill from Chancellor Boulevard. Perhaps it's an accolade? Yes it is.
A Whitcomb at UBC on Agricultural Rd between 99 Chairs coffee shop and Klinck building started blooming before Feb 12, still looking good March 14. Here's a photo March 8. ... and an update March 28 shows that after 6 weeks it still puts on a great show! ... and a final update April 4 - most of the flowers have fallen off in the past few days -- 7 weeks of blooming. * Denis, Cherry Scout for the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival (vcbf.ca) *
Several Okame cherry trees are blooming at the parkade entrance by the UBC ASian Centre. I was excited by the first sight.
You can really see the influence of Prunus campanulata in this cultivar. Prunus x incamp 'Okame' (P. incisa x P. campanulata). Unfortunately, Joseph's photographs, which are excellent (as usual), do not show the extent of brown rot damage on these plants.
Dieback martyr on many Seattle area sites also. Closeup shot on right shows what you get, some trees here look like spider webs full of dead bugs - not a handsome spectacle when these are mass-planted, as in a theater parking lot across from my doctor's office. However, claimed to not be badly affected in eastern US.
Geez, Douglas. Who other than a botanist would talk like that! I'm not really into disease and don't know if any of these maladies is the brown rot, but here are some photos of these UBC trees that clearly show distress. Here's also one that shows the size of the blossoms - the diameter is less than that of a penny.
Somei-yoshino - UBC University Blvd at West Mall One block up from Lower Mall, this Somei-yoshino cherry (UbcTree# 4866) was a few days ahead in blooming than the Festival Favourites. The green moss and lichen on the big grey trunk nicely set off the pale flowers.
* Finished - Somei-yoshino - UBC, on Lower Mall This is a beautiful canopy of Somei-yoshino trees from Lower Mall to Memorial Road on the UBC Campus. They usually bloom in early April.

Re: Somei-yoshino - UBC, on Lower Mall They look just like Akebonos look to me too, but on Douglas's "Tree Walk and Talk" last year, he pointed out the witches' broom on these trees, which Akebonos aren't supposed to get, so as long as these things follow the rules, we can tell them apart: witches' broom - Somei-yoshino; staminodes - Akebono.
We saw the first Shirotae blossom at the parkade near the Asian Centre. Only one beauty with a lovely smell. More soon. Ieda will send some photos.
UBC Accolades (Barn) & Akebonos (Agronomy Rd) Two accolades in front of the Barn coffee shop on Main Mall (UBC tree# 5557-5558) and a row of akebonos (?) nearby on Agronomy rd. (#3806...). Lovely and luminous despite the light rain.

Somei-yashino on Lower Mall to Memorial. Now is the perfect time to see this pathway with splendid blossoms. Sun helps too!
Shirotae at the Parkade near the Asian Centre - north side is in bloom - April 8. South side is almost ready to bloom. Maybe by Douglas's walk on Saturday.
The Accolade that Melody reported as the first posting in this neighbourhood one month ago still looks excellent. Here are the Shirotae at the Fraser Parkade that Mary-Ellen reported in the previous post.

Re: Ubc - Ito-Kukuri The five Ito-Kukuri on the 6300 block Bio Sciences Road are in bloom now, April 25. The blossoms are so beautiful; I'm sorry I was only reminded where they were after most of the people I was with had left. [edited 2011Mar14 by wcutler]: These were all cut down for building construction.
* POSTED - Ojochin (now Taki-nioi) & 7 cultivars at Nitobe Garden As of April 25, the Ojochin (we think) is completely in bloom; the Kanzan leaning gracefully over the water is almost in bloom, the Shogetsu has a very few blossoms and the Jo-nioi (or Taki-nioi?) has not at all started. The Ojochin is the skinny tree leaning to the right in the foreground.
