This row of 'Shirotae" between the Health sciences parkade and the courtyard entry to Purdy Pavillion at UBC. They were beautiful last week, and now are sad ly just past their prime. Bright green new growth. I still did not get a scent of Almond this year. They were a row of magnificent white last week, but now you see the fade to pink centres.
This group of 'Shirofugen" right at the entrance to the Health Science Parkade across from UBC hospital. You can see the 2 green phylloid pistals (elephant trunks) in centre of the flowers in a couple of the shots. These are very old trees and have the silver disk, with the number, from a time when UBC had accession all the trees on campus. You can see the bright red bract at the base of the flower stems.
another row of 'Shiro-Fugen' these ones were shown to us last year on a walk with Douglas Justice through the campus. these too are old trees along a bend in west mall. Also a silver disk with the number, but a different number than the one from the group at Health Sciences Parkade. you can see the 2 elephant tusks again (phylloid pistils) and the bright red bracts. the flowers will fade to pink and the leaves will change to green within 2 weeks...

Ian Cumming has sent some photos: "Acadia is my favourite in our area - young trees, no wires and few cars." He also sent this photo from Chancellor Blvd and Queensland, in "Little Australia". He has explained: "This tree is on the boulevard between the two lanes, and the photo was taken about 45 degrees off the road alignment. There were about 5-8 small 'Kanzan' along the boulevard, but they were irregularly spaced, so they did not make a nice in-line photo".
'Whitcomb' is about 20% out at UBC. These are trees are near the parking lot and are not grafted. They are still looking healthy (no signs of brown rot). Unfortunately, the garden is closed for another three weeks.
Thanks for posting this, Douglas. It seems 'Whitcomb' are at about the same stage, if not everywhere, at least in several areas.
Here is the 'Accolade' on Wesbrook at Chancellor Blvd, with mountains for @Willard. It has been open for a while, is past the stage where there are deeper-coloured buds for contrast.
The 'Somei-yoshino' trees at the Chan Centre at UBC are in bloom now. The same cultivar on Lower Mall are hardly open at all.
Some very nice looking white Ojochin cherry blossoms and yellow Asagi cherry blossoms just off the UBC Botanical Garden parking lot (easy to miss if you're not looking for them).
Welcome, @pennyandrusty, and thanks for contributing your photos of these trees in the Peter Wharton Cherry Grove. In a long series of discussions elsewhere on these forums, Douglas Justice decided to go with the people who said it's not really a separate cultivar from 'Ukon'. So as long as he's saying 'Asagi' doesn't really exist, I have changed the cultivar name on our map to 'Ukon'. The tag has never been changed, so I'm not sure what's up with that, but I've been calling it 'Ukon' in keeping with our book and the last thing Douglas told me. There are other trees in the grove posted at Ornamental Cherries at UBCBG 2021 | UBC Botanical Garden Forums. I decided I like your posting here, to create some awareness of the grove at UBC Botanical Garden when people read this neighbourhood blog. And thanks for adding the map markers, which I should have done but did not do!
Hi, Everyone, I went to UBC Nitobe Garden yesterday and was happily surprised to find a number of newly planted Cherry Blossom trees. Some I could identify but there were 3 I wasn't sure of. The picture below shows where some of the new plants are: #1 is blooming with beautiful white flowers. I am not sure what cultivar it is. I am guessing it's Taki-nioi? #2 flowers are in late stage. I am guessing it is Atsumori? If it is I would be so happy to see more of these lovely little blossoms :) #3 is Shirotae. #4 and #5 are Shiro-fugen. I didn't take close up photos of those trees. #6 is in another photo (couldn't take them all in one image). The flowers are in late stage. I am not sure if it is Shijaku? There were also a few new plants nearby the big Taki-nioi tree: Kiku-zakura -- just starting to bloom. Washi-no-o -- flowers are almost gone. I don't have pictures of these two plants.
Unfortunately, I don't think it's 'Atsumori', going by what I can see of the sepals. Have a look at the sepals on the back of the flowers at Identification: - Atsumori - double pink mid-season, small | UBC Botanical Garden Forums. The sepals are so triangular, even equilateral, wide and not deep. It's funny, on the blurry flowers, the sepals look right! But on the very clear one at the bottom left, they look different. I posted a newly planted 'Accolade' with new flowers on April 14 at Ornamental Cherries at UBCBG 2021 they could possibly look like these two weeks later, since flowers don't seem to be dropping from trees this year, and the short sturdy pedicels look similar. I've been rehearsing my "I don't do IDs at this stage" line. Your guesses seem fine, though I wonder about the oversized sepals on the 'Yokihi' guess. We should try to catch these next year. We could meet there!

[Memorial Rd between Main Mall and West Mall] I love the contrast of the new fluffy cherry blossoms in front of the Old Administration building wrapped in the dead vines of ivy(?)... [Lower Mall & University Blvd] Here you can sit on the benches among the cherry trees and have a picnic like "hanami" in Japan. As an added bonus, there is the best pizza place (Mercante) right by it. [Asian Library at the bottom of Memorial Rd, beside Nitobe Garden] All photos were taken on March 30, 2022.

I visited the UBC Botanical Garden (around the parking lot only) for the first time. I was amazed to see a variety of cultivars at one location. Thanks to Wendy, I'm learning a lot!! Umineko Ichiyo is starting to bloom. Accolade Mikuruma-gaeshi Interesting to see Ojochin starts blooming from the bottom. Surugadai-nioi seems way past its peak. Caught the last surviving cluster of Whitcomb. Pandora
