Understock - Sacrificial Branch

    Sometimes when I receive mail order JM, with a fairly decent length and wide leader - like 5' high leader - plants sold as a 5G/7G or even a #15 box, etc.

    Is it grown to be sold at those sizes with the goal is to keep the branch from the understock is *kept* on the plant a bit longer to promote growth ?

    I ask as sometimes I received said size plants and when they have pruned the understock off the graft, it's anywhere easily 1/4 - 3/8" thick in diameter. They are just more clearly *visible* due to what appears them being cut off at a later date in time versus just cut off when the graft took and was uppotted from a growers line to a 1G pot , etc
