Unidentified seedlings, or hybrids, or trees from seed. The one on the right : Acer oliverianum, and a seedling that looks pretty much alike, but not totally the same - so far : "Atropurpureum", one with a brownish red, others with more or less dissected dark red leaves :
Your oliverianum is very dissected for the species, even for a young plant.... I hope you have better luck with dissectum seedlings than I do!
I'm kinda like you @AlainK. I bunch seeds together that don't germinate the first yes or label get loss. Can anyone have any thoughts on this one? Possibly Acer campestre? I also have these
Good morning D, I'm sitting on front of my computer screen waiting for a Zoom meet and this dropped in. IMO it is Campestre, but the tips are a little more narrow than on the Campestre leaves over here, that are a little more rounded at the tips.
My husband passionately dislikes dissectums, but nevertheless I collected some seeds from a park tree (second photo, from google maps, sorry for the poor quality, I suspect ’Orangeola’, fall colors). I was surprised that even the first true leaves are heavily dissected. Did not expect that and I couldn’t find any pictures online of germinating dissectum. They are not fully developed, but one can tell already. Interestingly, nothing germinated after one winter, I had to wait two years to see these guys. I wonder if this is a general dissectum feature?
And why doesn't he like Dissectums N ? He needs more coaching, lol. Re the seedlings, these are Cotyledon leaves that are normal. They drop off after around 6 to 8 pairs establish. So IMO all is fine. Do hope you get one like in your photo, the parent I presume ?
Hi D, he dislikes the weeping habit. To him it is very unnatural looking. Yes, that is the tree I collected the seeds from. Not really sure whether it is ‘Orangeola’ or not. I was referring to the first true leaves, not the cotyledons. I was expecting they will be the generic single-lobe heavily serrated palmatum first true leaves.
Ah I understand, the Cotyledon answer not your husband not liking dissectums, lol. Everyone to their own though. So, yes N if they are from a dissectum parent then they will be dissectum leaves from the start. I have never seen anything different, but as is always the case, I expect someone on the forum has. As you are probably aware the liklihood of getting a perfect copy of the parent is very hit and miss. But this you will see over the coming months. The more you have the better the chance.
Any ideas what these are please? They have popped up all over my maple pots. They don’t look like seedlings I’ve had previously.
Sorry Emery I was replying to you re Sycamores, that makes sense..but thanked Derek by mistake..I desperately need to see an optometrist..I’ve never had spectacles but I am developing age related short sightedness.. Thank you Derek too..
Also so easy to do after 2300hrs R. I do not function very well at that time, glasses or not. Glad E got an ID for you. But I did think about that well known TV advert when you said about needing an eye test, lol.
Has anyone had palmatum dissectum seeds germinate after only one cycle of cold stratification? (I asked that before, but got no answers...)
I most have missed it. I had success last year with a good number of the and they are coming alone fine this year.
As for the dissectum seedlings, yours look more like matsumurae (even if they were the progeny of a dissectum). I have a single shot experience with dissectum seeds, but I got them to germinate only after two winters. Which probably means that you should keep that tray for one more year, and maybe true dissectum seedlings will germinate next spring.
