We have a "compost" pile in our backyard. No one ever does anything with it other than throwing more stuff onto the pile. It is mostly grass clippings, and weeds, with a few kitchen scraps thrown in. The stuff on the bottom is around 2-3 yrs. old. What I'm wondering is, will any of it be of benefit to put in my garden?

Yes, absolutely. It will turn into compost without doing anything as long as you leave it long enough. It just happens much faster if you work it a bit. If you want the pile to heat up, the bigger the better.

    Hi there,

True. You have to turn your pile regularly to have 'activity' faster. Now you can use the bottom part (since this part is now ready) for your plants. To get to that part, move the upper part to the side until you get to the ready compost. Use the compost. Then, going forward, turn your pile.

What I do with the top, dry, part (during bed preparation, Springtime) is to put this stuff into the bed and work it to the soil.

    Hope this helps.

Because our pile is contained by a fence on two sides, and a tree on the other, only the front is accessible. I was able to get a bit of the "good stuff" out. To really make use of it, I will have to convince my stronger husband to help. That will not be an easy task in itself. lol.
