Before I moved to Southern California (near Disneyland) I never had trouble growing the ubiquitous and very hardy Concord grape, which I use to make great jelly and wine of questionable drinkability. My attempt to grow a Concord down here met with disaster until I found something called a "California Concord" in the nursery. I now have a vine that's several years old, but it does not behave properly. Unlike my previous experiences farther north, this vine sets fruit throughout its fruiting season. For example, right now in October there are very sweet, ripe grapes for the picking, but also newly-formed green ones as well. What I am wondering is whether this particular variety is odd in this respect, or whether the standard Concord might do the same thing in this region. Also, is there a 'fix' for a situation like this? I've tried cutting off newly-forming clusters in July and August, but they just keep on coming. Any recommendations for an alternative variety will be welcome.
