Identification: What is this?

    This has turned up under one of my trees..any ideas what it is please? Must have been deposited by a bird

    Looks like Helleborus foetidus (Stinking Hellebore). Try crushing and smelling the leaves, should give you an idea if this is right!

    Thanks @maf actually I could smell something strong in close proximity without crushing leaves!

    Stinking Hellebore is native to England, but is also available in several garden forms with improved flowers or foliage. Occasional seedlings tend to pop up around the garden if they are grown nearby, but they are not invasive or thuggish. Ants are known to spread the seeds (and there are likely other spreaders) so could have come from a neighbour's garden or a nearby patch of wild land, depending on whether it is a wild form or garden form.

    Thanks for the info..I’ve not noticed any of them next door in the park, but I’ll take a good look.. You can smell them if you get close without disturbing them
