Hi! I have a variety of ornamental grasses - fountain, fescue, Karl Forrester, blue oat, flame, ribbon... Can anyone tell me when is the correct time to cut them? I have been told both in the spring and in the fall. Does it matter? I have done both and haven't noticed any difference. Also how short do you cut them? Thanks. Cheers, meme
Most ornamental grasses look just as attractive in the winter so leave them until Spring. Cut them back down to the new growth. Mine grow so rapidly, they need to be divided every year.
I agree, the tall grasses look great even in the winter. If u need to divide, fall or spring is ok. Blue Oat grass just needs to be raked in the spring, dont cut it. Deschampsia, Calamagrotis, cut in spring close to ground. Fountain grass is probably treated as an annual in your area. All in all they can take alot.
