Which Japanese Maples to Grow from Cuttings

Discussion in 'Maples' started by FredT7, Feb 5, 2004.

  1. Some Japanese maples are hard to root from cuttings. Some root O.K. but produce inferior root systems.
Does anyone know which ones can be successfully grown from cuttings?
    Thanks, Fred

I have successfully rooted Acer palmatum 'Sumi nagashi' from stem cuttings, and I expect most other similar vigorous cultivars would root easily, as well.

I've seen a local propagator have good success using bottom heat and mist with Bloodgood and Seiryu and moderate success with Sango Kaku. Suminigashi was more difficult as were the dissectums.
