I'm trying to get some Fagus crenata seed, does anyone know where I can get some? I'm in the UK but if anyone can send me some I would be happy to pay postage from anywhere.

    Thanks,

    Hi Tom,

Methinks this one will need a trip to Japan next autumn! The Tree Register of the British Isles lists one at Glasnevin BG in Dublin, but there is a high risk that any seed from it would come up hybrid with F. sylvatica.

sadly my student loan won't stretch to a trip to Japan :( It's a shame as there are some lovely trees in Japan.

Even a potentially hybrid Fagus could still be interesting!

Too true! I can't afford to go there either :-((

Bean (Trees & Shrubs Hardy in the British Isles Supplement: p.237) lists two at Petworth House (Sussex), and singles at Kew, Thorp Perrow (Yorks) and Birr Castle (Eire); trouble is, they're all old data (1975-1984), so they might not be there any more. The Sussex ones in particular could have gone in that 1987 storm.

Last year I ordered some F. crenata seeds from "Sandeman seeds". About 30 % of them started to germinate.
However I finished with only one seedling due to a mildew ...
